10 Skills Every Qualitative Researcher Should Have

I thought qualitative research was simply interviewing participants and generating themes, until I took a qualitative research methods course during my doctoral education at West Virginia University 12 years ago.

Also, working closely with my supervisor as we worked on funded projects, I began to appreciate the need to:

  • Be aware of the philosophical assumptions associated with qualitative research

  • Make sure I am asking the right questions when interviewing participants

  • Develop codes and themes that reflect data collected and answer the research questions I have

  • Be transparent in the research process

  • Keep my audience in mind when presenting my findings

  • Demonstrate how the findings can be used

These experiences have made me who I am today.

If you plan to be a qualitative researcher, I have provided 10 skills you need to have. Click below to download the file.
